Taking a tour of underground Berlin

Hola,

Today I'm thinking about taking a tour of the underground tunnels of Berlin. There are different tours to choose from, so I think we have to choose wisely.

Tour 1: The main themes of this tour are the bombing campaign and civilian shelters, the bunker complexes as well as a selection of objects from below central Berlin, remnants from WWII.

Tour 2: Since 2004 we have been conducting tours inside the Anti Aircraft Flak tower in Humboldthain park. During this slightly more adventurous tour we explore two of the original 7 floors of Berlin's largest bunker complex. Pieces of collapse concrete support each other, and high bridges provide dizzying drops.

Tour 3: This tour shows how deep the impact of the Cold War and the Division of Berlin 1961–1989) in the Underground world has been. In the first part you will pass through the “nuclear blast-proof” bunker beneath Blochplatz, its’ white-washed walls, large metal doors and modern ventilation systems. In the second part of the tour, we will take you – via a short Subway ride to a modern civil shelter at U 8 Subway Station – the fourth largest installation of its’ kind in Berlin for 3,346 people.

Tour 4: This tour covers the global reach of this communication system, and how the varied history of this small technological communications miracle was (almost) completely forgotten for a very long time. We explore the basement levels of the Central Telegraph Office at Oranienburger Str. whilst providing a comprehensive explanation of the technical aspects of how the Rohrpost system functioned.

Exciting, oder? Apparently there is also a tour of the HUGE, "cathedral like" beer vats that stretch some 20 meters underground and are almost 200 years old.

I can't decide. Help me out.

Hi Matthias, your mom gave me the link to JYA. I'm the one who took photos in Venice for your grandad. I would choose tour 2 because it sound the most dramatic. Enjoy, Sylvia Holmes

Hello, Matthias. It's Mr. Bryant from Indiana. My classes voted, and the unanimous decision regarding the tours was for tour one - the tour of the civilian bunkers. For some mysterious reason, though, the tour of the beer vats was a close second. Hmmm...

Hi Matthias. :) My name is Kitty and i'm from Herr Bryant's class. All the tours sound interesting, but i'm definitely voting for one of the first two.

And sorry to hear you have a cold. Hopefully you're feeling better??

Hi Kitty!

Thanks for posting! Both 1. and 2. sound amazing. I think 1. is a little more central than 2. and thus more immediate. I also think that tour 1. would provide for a better understanding of what civilians went through on an almost daily basis.

Thanks for the kind words in regards to the cold. Happy to report it's on the mend! A little tea and some cough syrup should do the trick - I think.

Glad to hear you're cold is getting better... At least it's not snowing there like it is here... Burr cold!

I'm definitely excited to see the tour. Herr Bryant and Herr Brown are taking a group of students to Germany this coming summer. (I can't wait to go!) It's awesome to get to see some actual parts of Germany that aren't straight out of a text book.

Hope everything else is going well!
